Custom Calculations

About Custom Calculations

Podium is able to link your excel spreadsheet with our output data.
When project scenarios are generated in Podium, a significant amount of data is created behind the scenes. Although the user interface of Podium allows you to view specific model data metrics, it may be beneficial to integrate the generated data with your company's spreadsheets. For instance, if you have a spreadsheet for conducting a commercial analysis of a project that requires area data inputs. The Custom Calculations feature enables you to upload and link your spreadsheets with Podium in order to perform Excel calculations in the background and present custom outputs on the platform. This approach is more efficient than manually inputting exported model data into a spreadsheet.

Access Custom Calculations

You can find the access Custom Calculations in the expandable left-hand panel in Podium. By clicking on ‘Custom Calculations’, you’ll get directed to the main page of this feature.

Preparing your excel spreadsheet

Before you start uploading your spreadsheets to Podium, it is important to understand which model metrics are currently exposed and can be mapped to your inputs. With that knowledge you can assess which of your existing spreadsheets are compatible and get ideas for new spreadsheets that can be used with Podium. A list of the currently available metrics can be found at the end of this article.

Available metrics in Podium

The following metrics represent:
IPMS1: Total Floor Area
IPMS3: Total Net Leasable Area

Set up Excel Spreadsheet

1. Name input and output cells
To ensure compatibility with the Custom Calculation feature of Podium it's important to utilize the Name Manager to assign 'Input_' as a prefix for your input cells and 'Output_' as a prefix for your output cells in the spreadsheet. This naming convention enables Podium to distinguish between input and output cells before facilitating the mapping of these elements to model data.

2. Name input range
If required, you are able to give a range of inputs a single name with the prefix ‘Input_’. When mapped to Podium, the feature will add model data to the range until either all instances of the model have been added or until the range is fully filled out. When working with ranges, please ensure that the range length is proportionate to the length of model data instances you are intending to map.

Manage Calculations

When arriving on the ‘Custom Calculations’ page, you will see a list of all custom calculations you either created or someone shared with you. You can switch between your and shared calculations by clicking on the corresponding header tabs. A count next to each header tab also indicates to you how many custom calculations are available at this point in time in each section. .

Visibility

The visibility toggle controls if the corresponding custom calculation appears in the specified scenario space or not. Please note that this setting only applies to you and does not affect the visibility of the calculation for users you shared it with.

Functions

Clicking on the kebab menu on the right-hand side of each calculation line item enables you to access an array of functions.

Download

By clicking on ‘Download’ you can download the spreadsheet that is linked to the custom calculation to your local drive. This can be required if you want to change formulas or other soft inputs within the spreadsheet.

Duplicate

In case you want to create a version of a calculation with different behaviour, you can simply click ‘Duplicate’, which will create a copy of the selected custom calculation. This function also creates and stores a copy of the uploaded spreadsheet within the platform.

Edit

You can come back to the form to map and edit parameters by clicking on ‘Edit’ for a respective custom calculation line item in the list.

Share

Custom calculations are user managed, which means that no other users will see a custom calculation you add to Podium, unless you share it first.

Map Fields from Excel Spreadsheet

Once you uploaded a valid spreadsheet into the form, additional fields will appear enabling you to map defined inputs and to add suffixes to outputs.
Space & Typology
Every input cell or range you defined in your spreadsheet, needs to be mapped to a Podium metric. The list of metrics can be found at the end of this article. For ease of finding the metric you want to map, you can filter the metrics-list by space and/or typology. For example, if you select ‘Industrial', then metrics related to residential buildings won’t appear (i.e., Apartments Total Count).
The other aspect of the ‘Space’ selection is controlling in which scenario space your custom calculation can appear. For example, if it’s set to ‘Site’, then this custom calculation can only be visible in ‘Site’ space.

Map Input
Every cell or range that you named with the prefix ‘Input_’ in the spreadsheet you uploaded to the form will appear as a field to map. If that is not the case, please return to your spreadsheet and double check that you named the cells correctly using the name-manager as described above.
To map an input to a Podium model metric, simply look for the metric in the drop-down list next to the input field. The ‘Podium Property’ fields are also text-search enabled and you can find the desired metric by starting to type its name.

Set Output Suffix
Up to ten cells that you named with the prefix ‘Output_’ in the spreadsheet you uploaded to the form will appear as a field in the ‘Output’ section of the form. If that is not the case, please return to your spreadsheet and double check that you named the cells correctly using the name-manager as described above.
The ‘Suffix Unit’ enables you to add a suffix to each output cell, to make it more meaningful to users when reviewing a preview of the results within a scenario.
